EcoEnergy Retrofit Program

The provincial program will provide homeowners up to $150 toward a home energy audit! An energy audit can show homeowners how to improve energy efficiency for things such as cooling, hot water and insulation around the house. A typical homeowner could save about $1,200 per year on energy bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1-2 tonnes.

Anyone who lives in Ontario and owns a single family home is eligible for the program. The Home Energy Audit Program will provide a rebate of 50% of the cost of the pre-retrofit audit up to a limit of $150. A pre-retrofit audit is an audit conducted before any renovations are undertaken to improve energy conservation in the home.

Homeowner hires an auditor licensed by Natural Resources Canada for a first or pre-retrofit audit. Natural Resources Canada licenses home energy auditors and updates the list as auditors are licensed. More information is available at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) web site.

The auditor carries out the pre-retrofit audit and provides the homeowner with a report that contains recommendations on energy efficiency improvements. Once the pre-audit is complete the auditor notifies the provincial Home Energy Audit Program. The provincial Home Energy Audit Program will issue a $150 rebate cheque to the homeowner for the pre-audit.

The maximum grant owners of single family homes including detached, semi-detached and low-rise multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) that are no more than three storeys high $5,000.

After you have completed your energy upgrades, our experts will provide you with a second (post-retrofit) evaluation and a new energy efficiency rating label that indicates your home's improved energy use. You have 18 months from the date of your pre-inspection to complete your follow up inspection.

Selling Your Home

After you've made energy efficiency upgrades and comfort improvements to your home, the NRCan Energy Efficiency Rating Label shows potential buyers how much you've improved your home's energy efficiency and how it compares to other homes in your area. You are not required to carry out a retrofit to receive Ontario pre-retrofit audit rebate. You will still receive a Report that contains recommendations on energy efficiency improvements that can give the Peace of Mind to the prospective purchaser.
